Build a clear list of moving services
A senior move can be one trip with a few familiar pieces or a larger transition involving packing and sorting. The useful question is what work you want included. Make separate lists for preparation, moving day, and the work you expect after delivery.
Before pickup
- Packing: identify which rooms or items need packing help and what you will pack yourself.
- Sorting: mark the belongings that are definitely moving; keep undecided items out of the final inventory until a decision is made.
- Furniture: note pieces that may need disassembly and keep their instructions or hardware together.
At the new home
Use a room plan to show where furniture should go. Label boxes with their destination rooms and explain any unpacking or assembly you want quoted. Confirm that the space will be accessible and ready to receive the agreed inventory.
Coordinate people and property instructions
Identify who will meet the move at each end, who can approve changes, and how they can be reached. If the destination is a retirement community, request its actual move-in process, available access times, and loading instructions. Do not assume the rules are the same as another property.
See our planning guides for Foxhill Village in Westwood and North Hill in Needham. These guides do not replace instructions from the community.
Confirm what the quote covers
Review the inventory, addresses, access, requested services, and dates together. Ask which preparation remains your responsibility and how changes will be handled. For the person-centered side of planning, read about senior movers and preparing for the transition.
